We didn’t make the list. We’re absolutely fine with that…

There’s a blog post doing the rounds at the moment. Pauley Creative — a well-regarded name in construction marketing — have published their top ten construction marketing agencies in the UK. It’s a reasonable list. Several good agencies on it.

CDP isn’t one of them.

We noticed. We smiled. We went back to work.

The agencies that shout the loudest

There’s a particular type of agency that’s very good at being visible. They enter awards. They win awards. They write about winning awards. They appear on lists of agencies that write about winning awards. They have a strong social media presence, maybe a podcast, a newsletter and a clearly articulated point of view on every development in the marketing industry.

None of that is a criticism. It takes effort and it has value. Visibility matters. Profile matters.

It’s just not really how CDP operates.

We’ve been doing this since 1969. In that time we’ve produced specification-winning marketing for some of the most recognised names in the built environment — British Gypsum, Marley, Marshalls, BASF, Isover, CDUK and many more. We’ve written the technical guides that architects reach for at specification stage. We’ve produced the animations that explain how systems work to people who need to install them. We’ve built the brands that building product manufacturers have taken to market and grown behind.

None of that required us to appear on a top ten list.

What under the radar actually means

It means our clients don’t talk about their agency. They talk about their work.

That’s partly a construction industry thing. The people who work with us are measured on specification rates, brand recognition and marketing ROI. They’re not measured on the prestige of the agency they use. They want results, not reflected glory.

It also means we’ve spent over 50 years building relationships rather than profiles. Many of our clients have been with us for a decade or more. Some significantly longer. That kind of longevity doesn’t happen because you’re good at entering awards. It happens because you consistently produce work that performs and because you understand your clients’ products and markets well enough that the brief gets shorter every year, not longer.

The work is the point

We make no apology for being prouder of a specifier guide that’s been in continuous print for fifteen years than we are of a trophy on a shelf. We’re more interested in whether an architect reached for our client’s CPD when they were specifying a wall system than in whether that CPD won a Construction Marketing Award.

That’s not false modesty. It’s just how we measure success.

Marley put it better than we could. Independent research shows them as market leaders for specifiers, architects and developers. They credit CDP as playing a crucial role in establishing and maintaining that position. That’s the kind of outcome that matters to us.

Not a top ten placement.

A thought for building product manufacturers

If you’re evaluating marketing agencies for your business, lists like Pauley Creative’s are a reasonable starting point. Some of the agencies on them are visible, active and clearly good at making themselves known.

But if what you need is an agency that already understands construction — that doesn’t need the technical detail explained from scratch, that knows the difference between what an architect needs and what a contractor needs and that has been producing specification-critical material for building product manufacturers since before most of the shortlist existed — then you may not find that agency on a top ten list.

You might find us through a client who’s worked with us for twenty years. Or through a specifier guide that caught your eye. Or through a CPD presentation that a competitor of yours delivered to a room full of architects last month.

Or you might find us here, quietly noting our absence from someone else’s ranking and getting back to the work.
